Forget the pumpkin spice! I could simply live on caramel apples for all of fall. They’re my favorite, but they’re also a lot of work to make from scratch. That’s where these easy caramel apple bites come into play!
Whether you’re hosting a holiday party or enjoying a quick sweet treat at home, these simple caramel apple pretzel bites are a sweet mix of tart apples, gooey caramel, and crunchy pretzels! Exactly what everyone craves in the fall!
How to make the best caramel apple bites:
- Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Lay out the pretzel snaps on your baking sheets, then top half of them with Rolos and the other half with caramels.
- Chop your granny smith apple into flat chunks, then set aside.
- Bake the sheet of pretzels with Rolos for 3 minutes, then immediately press a piece of apple on top of each softened Rolo.
- Set the baking sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm the Rolos back up. In the meantime, bake the sheet of pretzels with caramels for 10 minutes.
- Immediately top each apple with the softened caramel pretzels to create a sandwich.
- Enjoy these while they’re soft and gooey, or let cool to room temperature before serving!
Using store-bought caramels is a huge time saver here. If you can find them, buying Rolos unwrapped will save you a little time too, since traditional Rolos are individually wrapped in gold foil, it can be tedious to unwrap each one individually!
Thanks to a few simple shortcuts, this is a foolproof recipe that is nearly impossible to mess up. These are the perfect balance of salty, sweet, gooey, crunchy, and completely delicious. A guaranteed win in my book!
My top tips:
- BAKING: It’s important you’re using two baking sheets so that one can be filled with Rolos and the other can be filled with caramels. This makes it easy to bake them separately since the caramels need a little more time in the oven to soften.
- APPLES: Feel free to use red or green apples here. I prefer the green apples because they’re a little tart and balance out the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate in this recipe. I also recommend cutting your apples into flat chunks to create an even surface to sandwich the two pretzel snaps together.
- FREEZING: I recommend placing the tray of pretzels, Rolos, and apples in the freezer while the other pretzels and caramels are softening in the oven. This allows the Rolos to firm back up so that it’s not a slippery mess when you are sandwiching the caramel pretzels on top.
- SANDWICHING: It’s important to work quickly and assemble these caramel apple bites while the caramels are still warm from the oven. As the candy cools, it will begin to firm back up, making it hard to sandwich everything together.
- LEFTOVERS: I recommend letting these caramel apple bites cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container and storing them in the fridge. They ‘re best enjoyed day of but can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days. Longer than that, and the pretzels and apples will begin to lose their crunchy texture.
Sandwiching the Rolos and apples with another pretzel snap and piece of caramel not only adds more caramel flavor, but it also prevents the apple pieces from turning brown. If you even want to use only Rolos or only kraft caramels for these little bites, you can try that too!
