Calling all peanut butter and chocolate lovers, this Popcorn Puppy Chow (AKA Popcorn Muddy Muddies) is for you! Made with buttery popcorn, this is such a fun twist on the classic chocolate and peanut butter snack!

If you love a good snack mix, also try my Oreo Peanut Butter Popcorn, Caramel Chex Mix, Cinnamon Roll Popcorn, Gooey Coconut Almond Chex Mix, and Peanut Butter Popcorn!

Why you’ll love this recipe:

Everyone loves munching on puppy chow, but I’ve switched things up to use popcorn in place of Chex cereal for an out of this world snack that the whole family will love!

If you aren’t familiar with puppy chow– aka muddy buddies– it is usually Chex cereal that is coated in a peanut butter and chocolate mixture, and then covered in powdered sugar. You really can’t go wrong when peanut butter and chocolate are combined, and that powdered sugar layer really takes it over the top.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • Microwave popcorn
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Butter
  • Powdered sugar

Puppy Chow Popcorn has all the flavor of everyone’s favorite muddy buddies, but with the soft crunch of popcorn. This will be your new favorite snack!

That’s right–you take the world’s most addictive treat (puppy chow) and then make it with the second most addictive treat (buttery popcorn). Plus, if you use microwave popcorn, you’ve got that whole sweet and salty thing going on. It’s really hard to go wrong here.

How to make the best Popcorn Puppy Chow:

  • Pour your popped popcorn into a large mixing bowl, making sure to remove any unpopped kernels, and set aside.
  • In a microwave safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in-between, until melted and smooth.
  • Pour the melted chocolate mixture into your bowl of popcorn, then gently mix to coat the popcorn evenly.
  • Add in the powdered sugar, then mix (or shake if you have a lid) to coat completely.
  • Transfer the Popcorn Puppy Chow onto a baking sheet, spread it into an even layer and let cool completely before storing or enjoying!

Puppy chow popcorn is the perfect combination of chocolate, peanut butter, popcorn and powdered sugar. It is a fun sweet snack mix that is perfect for movie night and parties.

You’ve heard of puppy chow, but have you heard of Popcorn Puppy Chow? Made with popcorn, this is such a fun twist on the classic chocolate and peanut butter snack. Simple pantry-friendly ingredients, easy recipe, ready in minutes. This is what your friends will keep reaching for when they come over!

Muddy buddies. Puppy chow. Whatever you call it, we all know it’s highly addictive. This Puppy Chow Popcorn might even be better than the original and who doesn’t love puppy chow?! You know… that delicious combination of creamy peanut butter and melty chocolate drizzled all over Chex cereal, then coated with a nice helping of powdered sugar.

My top tips:

  • BOWL SIZE: Use the biggest bowl you can find for tossing the popcorn! A big bowl makes it so much easier to ensure the puppy chow gets fully coated in the chocolate peanut butter mixture as well as the powdered sugar. I also recommend using a rubber spatula here to avoid crushing the popcorn too much.
  • POPCORN: You’ll need roughly 10 cups of popcorn for this recipe- but it’s up to you how you pop it. Feel free to pop your own using about 1/2 cup kernels, use a microwave bag, or buy pre-popped popcorn. Just be sure to remove any unpopped kernels.
  • MICROWAVING: I recommend microwaving the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in 30 second intervals, then stirring in-between. This ensures everything melts evenly and becomes perfectly smooth.
  • COAT EVENLY: Be sure you fully coat the popcorn in the chocolate mixture. This is what the powdered sugar will stick to. I find that if you have a bowl with a lid, it can be easier to pop the lid on and shake rather than sir.
  • COOLING: It’s important to let this puppy chow cool completely before storing. If you store it while still warm, the powdered sugar will dissolve, and the popcorn will lose that crispy texture.
  • STORING: You can store this Popcorn Puppy Chow in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days, but I doubt it will last that long! If you want this to last longer, store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
