Easy Ritz Bits and Oreo puppy chow (muddy buddies) is made with Ritz bits crackers, mini-Oreos, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar- seriously delicious!
Traditional puppy chow is made from a base of rice Chex cereal but today we’re taking it to the next level with mini-Ritz and Oreos!
Why you’ll love this recipe:
This Ritz cracker and Oreo puppy chow is a fun twist on traditional puppy chow. There’s no baking required (just the microwave) and once you start munching, it’s hard to stop! It’s sweet, crunchy, and completely addictive!
Ok- lets settle the debate once and for all. Puppy chow or muddy buddies? I never know! It really just comes down to where you live and what you grew up calling it. I grew up referring to this as puppy chow, so that’s what I’m sticking to!
Ingredients you’ll need:
- Mini Oreos
- Ritz Bits crackers
- Creamy peanut butter (don’t use the natural stuff here)!
- Butter
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Powdered sugar
Us Midwesterners love our puppy chow! This snack mix is a staple for any gathering, including tailgates, grill outs and holidays!
It’s a fun take on the original and the slightly salty, buttery Ritz crackers are my favorite! It’s still super quick and easy to make, and sure to be a hit at your next party!
How to make the best Ritz Bits and Oreo puppy chow:
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt peanut butter, butter, and chocolate chips in 30 second intervals or until completely melted and smooth.
- Reserve ½ cup of Oreos and ½ cup of Ritz Bits for later, then add the remaining Oreos and Ritz to the chocolate mixture. Fold to coat completely.
- Transfer the chocolate coated Oreos and Ritz to a container (with a lid) or large Ziploc bag. Add in the powdered sugar, seal your container or bag, and shake to coat the puppy chow.
- Transfer the puppy chow to your serving bowl and add in the reserved Oreos and Ritz bits from earlier. Give it a light toss to evenly distribute, then let cool before enjoying for storing for later!
The best thing about this salty-sweet snack is that you can easily prepare it in advance or make a big batch for yourself and keep it in an airtight container or Ziploc bag for up to 2 weeks!
My top tips:
- I like reserving about ½ cup each of the Oreos and Ritz Bits so that I can throw them into the finished puppy chow as is! This just lets everyone know what they’re eating since you can’t really tell once it’s all covered in powdered sugar!
- I recommend microwaving the peanut butter, butter, and chocolate in 30 second intervals, then stirring in-between. This ensures everything melts evenly and becomes perfectly smooth.
- Be sure you fully coat the Oreos and Ritz in the chocolate mixture! This is what the powdered sugar will stick to.
- It’s important to let the puppy chow cool completely before storing. If you store it while still warm, the powdered sugar will dissolve, and we don’t want that!
- You can easily double or triple this recipe for a crowd. Just be sure you’re using a container or Ziploc bag large enough to accommodate all the puppy chow!
