Puppy chow (aka muddy buddies) is a delicious, no bake treat that’s perfect for gift giving or party hosting! Original puppy chow is made from Chex cereal that’s coated in a mixture of peanut butter and chocolate, then covered in powdered sugar. It’s absolutely addicting and so easy to make, just like this funfetti puppy chow!
How to make the best funfetti puppy chow:
- In a microwave safe bowl, combine white chocolate, coconut oil and almond extract. Microwave in 30 second intervals until smooth, then set aside.
- Add your Chex cereal into the largest bowl you can find, then pour in the melted white chocolate mixture and toss to combine.
- Heat treat the funfetti cake mix by adding it to a microwave safe bowl and microwaving for 60-90 seconds. In a Ziploc or large container with a lid, combine the funfetti cake mix, powdered sugar and sprinkles.
- Add the chocolate coated Chex to the dry ingredients and shake to coat. Transfer to a bowl for serving!
Despite the name, puppy chow is not for your dog, it’s for anyone who loves a sweet and crunchy treat. It only requires 6 ingredients to make and is so easy, you’re going to wonder why you didn’t make it sooner!
My top tips!
- I know Chex cereal is sold in a variety of flavors but the best one for this recipe is just classic rice Chex. If you’re going to use another flavor, I’d only recommend using corn Chex. Sticking the more basic flavor options for the cereal will let the funfetti flavor shine here!
- I’ve found that white chocolate can be very temperamental when trying to melt. It often seizes up and becomes lumpy and dry rather than smooth and pourable. The best way to prevent this from happening is heating the chocolate in short intervals and stirring in between until fully melted. The addition of coconut oil in this recipe helps thin out the white chocolate so that it coats the cereal better as well.
- Use the biggest bowl you can find for tossing the Chex cereal! A big bowl makes it so much easier to ensure the Chex gets fully coated in white chocolate. I also recommend using a rubber spatula here to avoid crushing the cereal too much.
- Heat treating the cake mix is not necessary but it’s a quick step that I would recommend doing to be extra sure the cake mix is safe to eat. To heat treat the cake mix, pour it into a microwave safe bowl and microwave it for about 60-90 seconds or until it reaches a temperature of 160 degrees F. This kills any unwanted bacteria from the flour without changing the flavor of this puppy chow!
- Any leftovers can be transfer to an airtight container or Ziploc bag and stored at room temperature for one to two weeks. You can also freeze puppy chow to make it last for months!
