Made from a can of store-bought biscuits, these shortcut biscuit pretzel bites are soft, chewy, salty, and so good dipped in cheese sauce!
Why you’ll love this recipe:
I’m always shocked by what a can of store-bought biscuit dough can do! In this case, you can make warm, crispy, doughy pretzels right at home! No bread making or fancy tricks required.
These soft pretzel bites are exactly like regular soft pretzels but shaped into smaller pieces for optimal snacking! They’re a perfect appetizer or snack for your next gathering, whether it’s a party, game day, or just a casual get-together.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Store-bought biscuits- I recommend Pillsbury Grands
- Coarse pretzel salt
You may be thinking there’s no way biscuit dough is going to taste like a soft pretzel without compromising any flavor or texture, but it’s all in the preparation! The thing that gives these biscuit pretzel bites their dark brown color and pretzel flavor is a quick dip in baking soda water.
Soft pretzel bites are one of my favorite bar snacks, but who wants to go through the struggle of making them from scratch? This shortcut version is super easy! No yeast, bread making, or special dough shaping is necessary here! 30 minutes and 3 ingredients is all you need!
How to make the best biscuit pretzel bites:
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking pan with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Add 5 cups of water to a medium saucepan, then sprinkle in the baking soda and bring the water to a rolling boil.
- In the meantime, cut each biscuit into 9 equal pieces. Once the water in boiling, drop the biscuit pieces into the baking soda bath (only 8-10 at a time) for 15-20 seconds.
- Using a slotted spoon or spatula, remove the puffed biscuit bites from the baking soda bath and transfer them to your prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all the remaining biscuit pieces.
- Sprinkle the tops with coarse salt and bake for 20-22 minutes or until deeply golden brown.
- Serve immediately with your favorite cheese sauce or honey mustard for dipping.
Using a coarse salt makes all the difference in making these biscuit pretzel bites taste just like a soft pretzel you’d get at the mall or state fair!
You can even find special pretzel salt if you’re invested, but it’s not necessary. You just won’t want to use fine salt for this recipe- it’ll just melt away into the dough! If you can’t get your hands on the right salt, you could even top these with a sprinkle of everything but the bagel seasoning instead!
My top tips:
- I recommend using traditional canned southern homestyle biscuits for this recipe. The store-bought flakey layers biscuits won’t keep the pretzel bite shape as well. If you like jumbo pretzel bites, you can also cut each biscuit into 6 pieces rather than 9. Keep in mind if you do this, you’ll have less pretzel bites!
- I recommend only adding 8-10 biscuit pieces to the baking soda bath at a time. The biscuit pieces are going to puff up while in the water and you want to avoid over-crowding your pan.
- It’s important to only leave the biscuit pieces in the boiling baking soda water for 15-20 seconds. If you leave them in much longer, they’ll become a little mushy and start losing their shape.
- I find that using a slotted spoon or spatula to remove the biscuit bites from the baking soda bath is helpful to drain off any excess liquid before placing them on your baking pan.
- You can place these pretzel bites close together on your baking pan because they won’t puff up too much in the oven. You’ll know they’re done baking when they are a dark golden brown on the outside!
These are so good, I’d happily eat them as, but feel free to dip them into your favorite cheese dip or honey mustard for a real treat!
