How to make the best frosted sugar cookie bars:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9×9 baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, sugar, egg, vanilla extract and almond extract.
- Once smooth, sprinkle in flour and baking powder. Mix to form a dough.
- Press the dough into the bottom of your parchment lined baking pan and bake for 20-22 minutes.
- While the cookie base is baking, make the frosting by combining butter, cream cheese, vanilla extract, powdered sugar and milk. Mix until smooth.
- Spread the frosting all over the surface of the cooled sugar cookie base. Finish with your sprinkles of choice before cutting into bars.
My top tips for success!
- Making the dough is pretty straight forward, but it is quite thick, which can make it challenging to spread into your baking pan. I recommend wetting your hands and pressing the dough into the pan using your fingertips. It doesn’t have to be perfect- the oven will take care of any imperfections!
- If you want clean looking bars, transfer the cookie pan to the fridge for 1-2 hours before slicing the cookies into bars. This gives the frosting a chance to firm up so that it holds shape when sliced.
- This recipe can easily be doubled to feed a crowd! Just be sure to bake it in a 9×13 pan.
